Section relates to De-Smogging the VTX1800R California version. Information taken from BIGLRY De-Smog Site

Disclaimer: Bike was de-smogged for photo purposes only. Bike is back to factory stock configuration...

Their are plenty of sites out on the internet that have photos of the desmog mod. This one geared mostly to VTX1800 Retro riders thinking about performing this mod with the block off plates.

First step is to remove the rider seat...

Service Manual Page 2-2

Note how your PCIII-USB (if you have one) is placed, it will save you time later when you re-install you seat. Sometimes it get jarred out of position and your seat won't rest right. Happened to me....

Remove the Speed Indicator / Fuel Tank Cover by removing the lower 3 screws.

Service Manual Page 19-7

I just left the harness connected and hung the whole setup over my right blinker. I used a towel for protection.

Once this section is out of the way you'll have plenty of room to tilt the gas tank over. Don't forget to put the gas cap back on the fuel tank!

Remove the gas tank bolt and lift the rear of the tank up.

After flipping the tank to its side, I felt I had enough room to work with. I just propped the tank on a stool covered with a carpet and towel.

Note: the towel I used was those Costco super softs. I didn't want to rub a scratch in using a cheap towel while working underneath.

Now you can see the all the smog plumbing...

With all the smog hardware installed you barely even see the top of the heads.

ordered these block off plates from Honda Direct Line - GP Cycles (German Pete's)

Part #: GPC-599

I had to punch out one corner of the plate, no problem. They fit perfectly.

You'll need to remove the screw head for a flush install. I just used a pair of vise-grips and twisted it off. Be careful not to damage the rubber gasket while twisting. Use "needle" nose type if you have them.

Service Manual Page 9-4

Pair Check Reed Valve removed. Getting the front cover was much easier than the rear. The rear takes time patience to get the bolts off.

Service Manual Page 3-16

For additional support I put a piece of 2X2 underneath the tank while working below.

In order to get the rear Pair Check Reed Valve Cover your going to have to get the Rear Ignition Coil out of the way. I just took out the bolts and stand-off and pushed it out of the way, gaining access to the rear cover

A much cleaner look once all the hoses, valves, plates etc. removed.
